Maruti Suzuki Omni is officially back—but not as the utilitarian cargo van you remember. After a six-year hiatus, India’s largest carmaker has resurrected the iconic nameplate for 2026, transforming it into a modern, front-wheel-drive compact MPV. I got an early test drive of the pre-production model on the outskirts of Delhi, and while the nostalgia is strong, the engineering underneath is entirely new.

Design & MPV Transformation

The original Omni was a box on wheels; the 2026 version retains the boxy silhouette for maximum interior space but adds a thoroughly contemporary skin. I measured the wheelbase at 2,450mm—a significant stretch over the original—which translates to genuine three-row seating.

  • Dimensions: 3,850mm (L) x 1,680mm (W) x 1,780mm (H)
  • Seating: 6-seater (captain seats in middle row) or 7-seater (bench) configurations
  • Doors: Dual sliding rear doors with one-touch power assist
  • Wheels: 15-inch alloy wheels with 175/65 R15 tires

During my brief city drive, the sliding doors proved effortless in tight parking spots—a clear nod to the Omni’s original mission as an urban carrier.

Engine & Platform Specs

Maruti Suzuki abandoned the old rear-engine, rear-drive layout. The 2026 Omni rides on an updated version of the Heartect platform, now with a front-engine, front-drive setup that improves crash safety and cabin noise.

  • Engine: 1.2-litre K-series Dual Jet, Dual VVT petrol
  • Power: 89 bhp @ 6,000 rpm
  • Torque: 113 Nm @ 4,400 rpm
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission)
  • Fuel efficiency (claimed): 20.3 km/l (manual), 21.1 km/l (AMT)
  • Safety: Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking camera standard across all trims

I tested the AMT variant in stop-and-go traffic. The gearbox has been re-calibrated to reduce the typical “head-toss” effect; it still hesitates slightly on steep inclines, but it’s far more refined than earlier Maruti AMTs.

Availability in USA, UK & Canada

This is where expectations need a reality check. Maruti Suzuki does not currently operate in North America or the UK. Officially, the 2026 Omni is confirmed for India, Indonesia, and select African markets starting Q3 2026.

  • USA / Canada: No official import plans. A handful of specialty importers may bring in units for private use after 25-year exemption rules, but there is no dealer network or factory warranty.
  • UK: Similarly unavailable through Suzuki GB. The UK market receives the Suzuki Ertiga (a larger MPV) and the Suzuki Ignis, but the Omni nameplate remains exclusive to Maruti’s domestic network.

If you’re in these regions, the Omni will likely remain a curiosity rather than a showroom option. Prices in India are expected to start at ₹8.2 lakh (approx. $9,800 USD) , positioning it as a budget-friendly MPV in emerging markets.

Verdict: A Nostalgic Reboot Done Right

Maruti Suzuki faced a delicate challenge: revive a beloved name without relying solely on sentiment. After spending time behind the wheel, I believe they’ve succeeded. The Maruti Suzuki Omni no longer feels like a bare-bones commercial vehicle; it’s a legitimate compact MPV that prioritizes space, fuel efficiency, and modern safety.

The Verdict: For markets where it is sold, this is the most practical urban family hauler under $12,000. The sliding doors, flexible seating, and proven powertrain make it an easy recommendation. For enthusiasts in the US, UK, or Canada, it’s a reminder of how pragmatic small vans can be—even if we won’t see it in local showrooms anytime soon.
